“Gatsby had told Nick the truth himself about his past. Many rumors were spread previously by individuals everywhere about Gatsby, that when it came time to Gatsby truly revealing his past, Nick had no clear impression of who he really was and Nick, himself, questioned if he believed “everything and nothing about him.” (101)
This quote represents how wrongly perceived Gatsby is. This notion can also symbolize the negative side of the American Dream by how people wrongly perceive it as well for something better than it actually is. Owning lavish cars and, in Gatsby’s case, having lavish parties is a way to mask the truth. No one truly knows who you are… all they know about is your money and what you can do and buy with it.
